It’s still a few months away, but the war in Ukraine is primed to cause real food shortages worldwide. Russia and Ukraine are two of the world’s biggest grain producers, but now production is poised to collapse. Russia and Belarus are two of the biggest fertilizer exporters, but those exports and fallen off. All around the world, countries are preparing for shortages by curtailing their own exports to secure their own domestic supply. It’s not hard to see what’s coming: Rising food prices worldwide. Hopefully, the effect is just limited to your pocketbook. But things could easily be worse, a lot worse. We might see actual food shortages, where there isn’t actually enough food to go around. This is already a problem in a country like Egypt. Egypt is poor and heavily populated, with a hundred million people clustered along the Nile River. Egypt can’t feed itself, when when food prices rise too much, there are riots. Egypt has had full-blown revolutions because of the price of bread.
It feels unthinkable to imagine a food shortage in America, but five years ago, you would have never expected us to have a shortage of lumber, or car parts, or computer chips, or baby formula. But in today’s America, shortages are a way of life, and the food we need to live might be next.
The best way to handle any shortage though is to be prepared before it happens, and that’s where our next guest comes in.
