Flour Tortillas from Scratch
Flour Torillas
So simple to make your own tortillas, I'll show you how and you will not want store bought again!
Ingredients
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon kosher salt
- 1/4 cup shortening or lard
- 1/2 cup hot water, at least 140° (F).
- 1 teaspoon cooking oil (approx.) or cooking spray
Instructions
- Mix flour and salt in large bowl.
- Add shortening with spoon, and mix with pastry cutter.
- Warm up water in saucepan or microwave to at least 140° (F).
- Gradually add water to dough, and and mix in spoon or pastry cutter. Finish mixing by kneading dough with hands.
- Form dough into golfball-sized pieces, then cover and set aside for 30 minutes.
- Roll dough balls out into tortilla shapes.
- Heat large frying pan on stove until warm, add oil or cooking spray, then gently wipe out pan with paper towel, leaving only a thin coating of oil.
- Once pan has heated up, cook each tortilla for 2 minutes, or until beginning to brown, then flip and cook 1 more minute on other side.
- Wrap in clean tea towel until ready to serve.
